Season of Lent 2008

Lent is normally a solemn season of fasting and repentance. However, in the Diocese of Chicago, we cannot be all that serious or solemn. On Saturday, February 2nd, the Presiding Bishop was in town to ordain The Rev. Jeffery Lee as the new Bishop of Chicago. With his consecration, Bishop Lee will bring a new era of excitement and energy to Episcopalians and to the religious community all across Northern Illinois. A large number of members of our two congregations participated in the service of consecration, held at Chicago’s House of Hope arena. We were all deeply moved by the pageantry and beauty of the celebration. Although we loved our dear Bishop Persell, we look forward to great things in the ministry of Bishop Jeffery Lee.

Bishops Lee Visits St. Clement’s 2/24/08

All of us at St. Clement’s and at St. Joseph/ St. Aidan’s were overjoyed to hear that Bishop Lee has

planned to visit our two congregations on Sunday, February 24. He will be preaching and celebrating

at the 10:30 Eucharist at St. Clement’s. We hope that the members and friends of both churches come

out to greet our new bishop. We will have lunch with the Bishop and Bishop Lee will take time to tell us about his vision for the diocese and to answer any questions we may have. This is an exciting

opportunity for all of us to get to know our bishop a bit more personally. We urge you to be with us on

 the 24th.

                                             Baptism on the 24th

Mr. Ziff Sistrunk is a new member of St. Clement’s. After worshipping with us for a number of months, has asked to be baptized. We have arranged for Bishop Lee to baptize Ziff on February 24. Ziff is a pledging member of the parish. He has joined the choir. If members of our Congregations would like to make a public reaffirmation of their faith that day, please call Fr. Reinhart at 708-528-9862 to be included in the service.

                                    Jubilee Ministries Move Ahead

Our Jubilee Pantry and Clothing ministry has moved ahead with great success. Under the leadership of Mary Lou Smith, our pantry staff and volunteers continue to serve over 300 needy families and individuals every month. We need more volunteers to help. We especially need someone to volunteer to coordinate the clothing program. Our friends from the Painters Union Apprentice Program brought us more than 20 huge bags stuffed with new and used clothing to give away to the poor, and more bags of clothing arrive every week. Please ask your family members and friends if they will volunteer to help us feed and clothe the very neediest people here in the south suburbs.

St. Joseph and St. Aidan’s Sports Program

Kids on Blue Island and Harvey are benefiting from the Spirit Quest Sports program, run by St. Joseph and St. Aidan’s. Large crowds of kids gather at Whittier School every Friday night in Lent to play basketball and to hear about the benefits of health and prayer and the dangers of gangs and drugs. This is year three for a successful program. It is backed by churches and School District 130. Even The Chicago Bulls have helped.
